The Aina Haina Shopping Center needs the renovation badly. Removations cost money. There is no doubt that rent will go up for all the tenants. People at the meeting said they want the 76 to stay or Foodland needs to be there. Think to yourselves, have you shopped at Foodland or filled gas at the 76 with in the past week??
The residents will have to step up and start patronizing the tenants to make it feasible for them to stick around. We as residents need to walk the talk also, we want these shops, so we need to support them.
September 28th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Please remember, just as we came togeher as one voice at the meeting, so must we everyday. Yes, I have shopped at Foodland, filled gas, & bought (2) of Uncle Clay’s icees in the past week. But I can’t do it alone.
This new company taking over management of the shopping center has occured because we ALL failed to patronize the stores in the past.
If we are to be so proud as to fight to keep our shopping center the way it is, with minimal renovations, then WE need to be equally proud to shop there. It’s not the most upkept, and snazzy shopping center… but it’s OURS!!
OUR friends, OUR neighbors, OUR OHANA!!
September 30th, 2008 at 9:27 am
I agree with all the comments so far—patronize our center–yes, we often buy at Foodland stuff and use to go to Komokata and weekly at Duk Yun—we go to the service station once and a while, especially for convience—
What a great community!—PS. Renovation yes, forcing out Komokata by requiring $150,000 or more in renovations to stay….NO. There seems to be a bigger plan for more expensive stores/shops…hopefully not. Most of us are on fixed incomes.
September 30th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
yes I agree with all the above….and yes we are all pretty much on “fixed income”. Let me ask you this….
“Uncle Clay”… he sells dim sum on saturdays. I stop going there because I got tired of hearing his sad stories about how it is hard to stay …. then all of a sudden, people are donate items for him to sell in his store… 100% profit for him. And the dim sum is not that great.. he charges WAY MORE then outside of his store.
Komokata’s— I have eaten there alot. Love the food and the people are a nice family atmosphere. But lets face it, the floors were brown and dirty, the restroom there needed a little cleaning, the cooking area looked crowded and oily. The RESTAURANT needed an update, but it is just a lost because the people there were like family.
I think we are all getting caught up in that we dont want “family” to leave. We all have to understand that the building needs a “face lift” and that we are talking about beauttifying aina haina…and there might be NEW FAMILIES that come in.
Because it is the PEOPLE that make the family… not that building/parking lot.

I grew up in Aina Haina and my parents were one of the first people to buy here. Changes are good but if only a few take a stand then if wouldn’t happen. I was not at the meeting but I do believe in dual process. I had heard alot about the meeting and the next meeting I plan to be there. Now that I live in Kaneohe and work a second job I can always be were I want to. My parents are getting old and the changes will affect the community. Like I mentioned earlier - changes are good for a community. Remember it is sometimes the person you put in office to represent your community.
When I grew up here the shopping center was beautiful and now I’m back working here - to me it looks the same but it is old - just as anything else. Age. I’m now 53 years old and think if to me it still looks the same what has happened to the stores, foundation?
I alway believe that things happen for reasons and maybe now is the time for Aina Haina to get a face lift. I agree - the service station needs to stay but gas is high and sometimes rent, and fuel cost can put a small business in trouble.
There are so many different reasons and I’m not one to judge but just listen and help out. Stand together and listen.
Have a great day.

the shopping center is an eyesore. it has not changed since i was a student at aina haina elementary. let the new owners update it and thereby increase the value of the aina haina area as a whole. personally, i think it should be torn down and rebuilt from scratch.
many in the area are doing just this with their homes!
let’s not lock into the past but envision the future, if not for us then our children. we will not have this opportunity to benefit from this influx of capital into our area for the next 50 years.
don’t discourage the developers!
October 6th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Also what has to be considered, is that the Bank may leave…and how about the Library? Yes, it’s on different land..but that may or may not make it “exempt” from any changes the new shopping center owner’s have up their sleeve. ALSO, I heard from a direct source, that the Owner’s made a proposal to the Holy Nativity Church… to buy them out. Now.. think, what is going on here? The Owners are developers/real estate investors…they DO have a plan. Any business man worth their salt DOES have plans in place for any property they buy, before hand. They are not just winging it. They have to sustain their “profit” and will of course need to make revenue and $$$ that they have projected ahead for themselves and all their business partners/board. Already, the gas station is being ousted, and this IS a necessity. But, the community is to me, not being taken into consideration for what we NEED as vital necessities in our shopping center. The only thing that HAS been confirmed to be staying is the Post Office… now, who in their right mind is going to take on the Federal. So naturally, they are staying.
Anyway, I would still be very wary of their verbal “talk” until we actually see something tangible… they sound like a bunch of politicians just saying things to prevent fall-out and complaints to their end goals.
October 6th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
And let’s not forget… what about the Aina Haina Professional building???? What will become of that? Lots of families and seniors are patients or clients there.
Think about the future of what VITAL NECESSITIES we need in OUR community. I would hate to think it will just turn into a “retail” mecca… and not a “community” center for the real world and what we really need. Don’t get distracted by the appearances of the building and renovations and the Owner’s “talk”…sure appearances will change, but what stores and resources do we REALLY need in our neighborhood and will we STILL have that? ie: a grocery store, a library, The First Hawaiian Bank, a gas station… the professional building… now, the gas station is already being booted, and who knows what else. The CORE importance for a community is being stripped away. THIS is what is important… the NECESSITIES for our community both young and old and children. This is being taken away… and they don’t seem too concerned about it. THIS is what the Community needs to rally for… to keep the necessary things that we need. Sure, progress and improvement… but at what cost?
October 6th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Well, a few of us have gotten letters this past week stating that the Aina Haina Branch of American Savings Bank is closing as of Dec. 31, 2008.
Those that were at the community meeting last month may remember Mr. Lotz saying that McDonald’s is on a separate plot of land, and the new management would like to aquire that plot as well. Negotiations, according to Mr. Lotz, allegedly included that if McDonalds joins with the new management, they want to close American Savings and bring in a Walgreens. The bank is closing at the end of the year. What next?
As far as Uncle Clay’s “sad stories”: try working a store like that by yourself everyday for twelve years, five months, and six days (which is what he completed as of today). People (including myself) do all we can to help renovate his store because we understand that its about more than just junk dim sun and sad stories. Its about a man who gives his ALL to the community he serves, and strives to stay open because he finds more joy in serving US, rather than making money.
Lets face it times are tough, but if you think this whole thing with the new management is about what stores are staying or going, think again. We are talking about people who served our community for YEARS losing their means of making a living.
October 6th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
I am NOT against renovation. But personally, I will fight to ensure that the facelift will not include liposuction, breast implants and plastic surgury. I don’t think the community wants another “Kapahulu Safeway” in Aina Haina.
October 7th, 2008 at 11:18 am
The new owners are about retail and revenue. THIS is the “plan” they have and are putting in place. Sure improving the “appearance” and making the building more “pretty” is fine… but this is their talk and their way of distracting the community from the REAL issues… which is: will the Community have what WE need…all our daily necessities are being removed- the bank, Chuck E Cheese, the gas station…Foodland and eventually, ALL the current shops and businesses there will “have to” leave. BUT the Owner’s will continue to say that is wasn’t “them” but the store owners who “chose” to leave. What bull.
The Owner’s make like they “care”…but eventually, the needs of the Community will be marginal. AND the children & families will no longer have a place to go to. How sad is that.
Well, like anything, I don’t think Community input will be considered and we WILL continue to see businesses leaving the center. The Owner’s will continue to say that they ARE “negotiating” with the current businesses there… but that is just another way of saying that the businesses will be closing down because “they” are not in line with the Owner’s “vision” for the Center. Again, it will be the businesses “fault” and not the Owner’s/Management.
I never believe what the new Owner’s/Management says. It’s all a farce. they are thumbing their noses at the Community.
October 9th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
So, the latest I’ve heard is that shortly after the Association meeting on Sept. 25th… in which Marvin Lotz & Fred Noa repeatedly said they were “negotiating” with the gas station… is that they raised their rent.. .and no, the gas station will NOT be staying. Also, the rent has been raised on other of the businesses, even though the Owner’s will deny that. And as for Foodland, well “negotiations” were supposedly going on with them too….and their rent is raised too.
The Owner’s are full of baloney. They are not telling the truth. The local business owners are the one’s telling the truth. It is pretty much the consensus… that gradually, ALL the business there will be “having” to leave, because they are not a part of the “vision” the new Owner’s have for the center. People need to be aware of that.
And, I’m afraid, the Library may even have to be going. Then we are left with nothing for the “Community.” How about that? People need to stand up and rally for things which we need… how pathetic is it that we are losing our gas station, our bank, and maybe the Library!
Well, that is the fate for the center. How sad…
October 10th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
I agree. We need to save our Shopping Center, if we want it to remain OURS. Not just the businesses that we need, but please remember the businesses that need US.

I wrote this above and will repeat it again.
The residents will have to step up and start patronizing the tenants to make it feasible for them to stick around. We as residents need to walk the talk also, we want these shops, so we need to support them.
November 5th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
As a resident of the area, I do my best to patronize the shops in the shopping center to the best of my ability. I get my hair cut there once a month, I get my gas there as needed, and I do my grocery shopping there twice a month. I am only one person. We ALL need to do what we can to bring foot traffic to the center. It’s the ONLY way our favorite stores will survive. Believe me, if you think prices are high now… they’ll be going up SOON. I have received word that some tenants of the center have received letters from the new management, stating that rents are going up 5%.
I’ll be doing what I can to help each of the stores, and my first effort is for Uncle Clay’s. Nowhere else can you experience such a humble nature and willingness to serve the community. He runs the store virtually by himself; seven days a week, yet he is always smiling, always welcoming, and treats everyone who enters the store as “Ohana”. He is the epitome of “Pure Aloha”
Therefore, I will be organizing a concert in honor of Uncle Clay’s concept of “Pure Aloha”, which will take place on January 9th, 2009 at the Aina Haina Elementary School Cafeteria from 7pm - 10pm. Tickets are on sale at Uncle Clay’s & 100% of ticket sales goes back to the store. My hope is to eventually do this for every shop owner in the center. We’ll see.
November 7th, 2008 at 8:34 am
“And let’s not forget… what about the Aina Haina Professional building???? What will become of that”—-THAT CANNOT BE USED BY NEW DEVELOPERS—–BUILDING TENANTS HAVE LONG TERM LEASE AT PROFESSIONAL BUILDING
“the Owner’s made a proposal to the Holy Nativity Church… to buy them out” UNTRUE…AT LEAST AS OF PRESENT TIME…. NO FORMAL OFFER
I AM TRYING TO PUT OUT CORRECT INFO OUT THERE–I TOO DO NOT WANT THE COMMUNITY SHOPPING CENTER SO RENOVATED OR UPSCALED SUCH THAT IT NO LONGER SERVES AND SUSTAINS YOU AND I—-THE RESIDENTS LIVING IN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY—WHILE ALLOWING THE COMMERCIAL TENANTS TO MAKE A GENEROUS LIVING—
November 9th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
The professional Building (to my knowledge) is on a separate parcel of land and does not pay lease to the entity witch controls the rest of the center. HOWEVER…
I recently heard that the new owners plan to move McDonald’s to where American Savings is currently, and open a WALGREEN’S in the spot that McDonald’s now occupies. This will force out the small pharmacy that is within the professional building.
We CANNOT let this happen. The new owners of the center need to be aware that this neighborhood does NOT want mainland chain stores in OUR Shopping Center!
November 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
1) Well, one of the Church member’s said that there WAS an offer.
2) what about the LIBRARY?????
3) sure the Owners are needing to make a “generous living” off of the shopping center and they will be getting residual income for themselves and their directors and heirs for a long time. So sure, it’s a commercial entity…and for profit. But, so the current tenants will have to do renovations, pay for it, and then later will get kicked out… after THEY did the renovations to their stores.. or they will be told they have to move into a smaller space. This is been the Owner’s generic “excuse” for “why” tenants leave… oh, and yah, after the Owner’s raise the rents, which HAS been done, but they deny.
Lot of “BS” by the owners…. they can’t be trusted.
Nothing is off limits and they will acquire whatever they can, & wherever… the library, the McDonald’s, the banks, the Professional building. NO gas station too already.
And NO children’s venues will be there anymore…no Chuck E Cheese, and I heard, the Tae Kwon Do center will be kicked out too. How pathetic. Yah, they sure “care” about the community.
They can’t be trusted.
November 11th, 2008 at 5:07 am
You are exactly correct.
In regards to the library, it has been said that it’s on state land and cannot be touched.
I am also saddened by the potential closing of facilities which tend to our youth, but what saddens me more is that the Merchants have an association that nobody wants to be a part of. Everybody is dog eat dog, in the face of one common problem and I think that will kill the shopping center just as fast as anything else that the new owners do. All the merchants depend on us to stay afloat, but won’t even join together and fight their own battles. Sad.
November 11th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Yes.. I have heard that too. It is sad.
But from what I hear directly from the merchants is that they all are (rightly) scared of doing anything or creating a united front against the new Owners…because of fear of retaliation or legal threats against them.
THIS is sad…that the community AND the merchants AND the families of Aina Haina ARE “afraid ” of the new Owners and their posse of a team. They are simply like low-class bullies… they know darn well that they are creating an antagonistic atmosphere and playing everyone against each other. That is what they want… because then they can “control” the people/locals… and manipulate them and then do as they wish. They talk different out of both sides of their mouth depending “who” they are talking too. When you hear directly from the merchants themselves…they SEE a very different personality/attitude from the new Owners…one that is MUCH MORE disrespectful and “bully” like. The merchants are on the front lines of the “battle”….and therefore, I believe them first. And not the owners who just care about their own back.
But yes, the merchants need to be NOT afraid of speaking out and forming a united front. But sure, it is scary for them… and in a sense, there is apathy.
The new owners remind me of long ago “Plantation Owners/managers” who talked down to locals, manipulated them, took them for “dumb” and played upon their emotions… all the while, holding them “hostage” by dangling false hopes in front of them… but in the meantime being mistreated.
What a racket the Owners are up to. No trust em”!
Everyone in the community… Go fo’ broke…. do WHATEVER it takes to insure the needs of our community. There will be NOTHING for the kids anymore (just retail and revenue shops for the owners to gain off of)… how pathetic… how pathetic if we aren’t a good example for the children and our elderly and stand up for our community….
Remember, mainland chain stores will sure, provide employment…BUT REMEMBER THE REVENUE/PROFITS THEY MAKE GOES BACK TO THE MAINLAND…it does NOT stay in our community. We don’t gain from this… we only gain as the end of the food chain shoppers.
IF THE NEW OWNERS REALLY “CARED” about the community they bought into… they would make a sincere effort… and CONTRIBUTE TO CHARITY/FUND RAISERS/CHILDREN FUNDS/COMMUNITY/the SCHOOLS/ the Library/and organizations in our town. They are NOT doing this… they are NOT “becoming” citizens of Aina Haina… Oh, but they will buy a house here to play in the sun and surf and live in a big mansion while looking “down” at Aina Haina and it’s people from their panoramic view while in their living room… what a crock. It’s just a vacation for them and a tax write-off for whenever they fly into Aina Haina…oh, but they will probably try and join the country clubs here. Ha, ha. How much justice is that?
They don’t care about the “people.”
They are getting what they want… our Hawaii is just an investment for them. Aina Haina is just one trophy for them.
November 12th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
I urge you…all of you who read my words.
January 9th, 2009 at Aina Haina school, I will be holding a benefit celebration in honor of Uncle Clay. In my effort to give him a small boost, keep a safe place in the center where the youth can hang after school, and bring some awareness to the community as a whole.
I’m asking $20.00 per ticket (which are already on sale at Uncle Clay’s), and all the money from ticket sales goes back to help the store stay afloat. Kindergarten to eighth graders are FREE with paying adult(s).
Also, please attend the AHCA General Meeting on January 14th, 2009. The new owners are scheduled to show their preliminary plans for what “renovations” they have planned. This would be the perfect opportunity for ALL of us to speak our minds in defense of the merchants. Perhaps if they see what we start, they might feel a bit stronger.
I’ve always said that I would do what I can to help the community. That is why I am ON the Neighborhood Board! I serve the community with my right to voice my opinion, but THIS TIME, I need you all to be there WITH me. I know we all have our favorite stores in the center. My hope is to pull the community together for ONE NIGHT, and show Uncle Clay what his 12+ years of looking after our kids while serving icee’s means to our families.. and show the new owners that these shops (ALL of them) have our SUPPORT! NOT JUST IN OUR WORDS, BUT IN OUR ACTIONS!
To everyone who ever said “I love Uncle Clay”, I would especially hope that you could attend the event.
We all need each other, and NOW is the time that fact needs to shine through. Please consider my words… before it’s too late.

I’m from Aina Haina living on the other side of the island. I can’t believe how people act. Remember your not any better than I and we still bleed the same blood. I’m sadden to be back and see and hear how people act in this community. How are you going to set examples for your children. The good old days are gone and some people who think they know it all are here. I’m ashame to say I grew up in Aina Haina. This valley is going down with all the gossipping people who have nothing better to do. Those of you need to get involved and use your energy in a better way. I guess - that what happens when you get new blood in the neighbor hood.
Sad to be back. Waiting to go back to the other side of the island where people are so different.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:22 pm
Lets see if you feel the same way when California invades your side of the island. Maybe the good old days are gone, but that does not mean that we cannot have a say in how WE develop OUR community. This community belongs to the people who live here, and if California thinks that we will sit back and let them decide what is best for us, they better think again. I will do all I can to make sure this community has the final say in how California “renovates” our shopping center.
January 10th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
ALOHA:Come to the Wednesday, January 14th meeting 7pm at the Elementary School Cafeteria. Lets continue to pull together to make Aina Haina a great community to raise our children and care for our elderly….with a community oriented, service shopping center. Everyone’s input at this meeting is important! The architectural drawings on this website are nice —but LETS MAKE SURE it is not at the cost of changing the existing community —because it is the people and essential services and parking and traffic safety which are most important to the residents. SEE YOU THERE!

On behalf of Ace Malibu and Aina Haina Shopping Center we are proud to announce that Mid Pac Petroleum and 76 Gas Station will remain at the Aina Haina Shopping Center. We have come to a long term agreement that will provide the community with a renovated gas station.
We hope that the community will frequently patronize and enjoy this wonderful tenant and amenity.

Hey. He was one of those men who think that the world can be saved by writing a pamphlet.
I am from Saudi and , too, and now am writing in English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “ To those who work diligently and ethically to provide medical care through the medicare program, we will work with you to root out the few who corrupt the system and taint the good reputations of health professionals everywhere.”
Waiting for a reply :-), Dylan.
