                    EMERGENCY COMMUNITY MEETING CANCELLED

The emergency community meeting (details below) has been cancelled.  Early the evening of Friday, October 21, Hospice Hawaii notified the Neighborhood Board that it was withdrawing its bid to purchase the property at 249 Nenue St.  Hospice Hawaii will still be presenting at the Neighborhood Board #2 meeting on November 3, potentially with plans elsewhere in East O'ahu.  AHCA representatives will attend that meeting and keep our community appraised of any activities of note.

Mahalo to all the community members who wrote letters to AHCA, our legislative and City Council representatives and to Hospice Hawaii to voice your position on this issue.

`ĀINA HAINA SCHOOL CAFETERIA; OCTOBER 24 at 7:00 P.M. (location has been changed to accommodate large turnout)

Hospice Hawaii Proposes New Commercial Hospice Facility in Aina Haina

On September 28, the AHCA Board President was asked to meet within 48 - 72 hours with the management team of Hospice Hawaii,Inc.  Hospice Hawaii is a well known commercial Adult Residential Care and Hospice Home operator based in Iwilei with facilities in Kailua, Palolo and Molokai.

Hospice Hawaii hopes to gain community support a hospice that can accept and support up to 8 resident patients. This proposed hospice home will be staffed 7 x 24 by a registered nurse and staff of nurses aides.  Their current plan is to close escrow on the purchase of that facility in late October.

In 2007 and again in 2008, AHCA  successfully opposed  ARCH II  facilities at 5304 Limu Place (at the corner of Limu and E. Hind Drive) in lower `Āina Haina. ARCH Type II facilities are generally commercial businesses, with full time employees, and operated by non-resident business owners.  In contrast, ARCH Type I homes, which are already present `Aina Haina, are limited to five resident patients and are usually owner-occupied and operated.  Because they are generally owner-occupied, ARCH I homes tend to be better integrated with and more sensitive to surrounding neighbors' issues and concerns about minimizing adverse  impacts such as traffic, parking, noise, health and safety.

Hospice Hawaii will present their plans for the proposed 249 Nenue St. hospice facility to the AHCA Board of Directors on Monday evening, October 24th, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at the  `Āina Haina  Community Park Pavilion (next to the `Āina Haina Community Park's baseball diamonds, park rest rooms and parking lot). All `Āina Haina community members are warmly encouraged to attend, ask questions and voice your concerns directly to Hospice Hawaii's President.

If you cannot attend the October 24th 7 p.m. AHCA meeting, please BE SURE TO ATTEND the Kuli'ou'ou--Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board #2 meeting on Thursday, November 3, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at the `Āina Haina Public Library's rear Conference Room.

If you cannot attend either meeting -- for that matter, even if you can -- please submit comments, questions and concerns directly to the AHCA Board by clicking on the "CONTACT" tab on this web site.  Your inputs will be kept strictly confidential, but will help us to more fully understand the concerns of our community so we can best represent ALL our interests.

                    Mahalo for your support.
